A Legacy of Care: Celebrating Beverly Williams’ 51 Years at South Florida State Hospital

Few embody our values more fully than Beverly Williams, who has devoted 51 years of service to South Florida State Hospital. As Beverly approaches her 80th birthday, we celebrate her remarkable journey, her resilience, and the profound impact she has had on countless lives.
A Journey That Began with Family
Beverly first came to South Florida State Hospital in the early 1970s, not just as an employee, but as a mother determined to build a better future for her children. Fresh from a divorce, she needed stability and a place that could support both her and her family. She often brought her four children with her to the hospital, where they spent time together in the family-friendly spaces the hospital provided.
What started as a way to provide for her family quickly became a calling. Over the decades, Beverly became a beloved figure at the hospital—known not only for her tireless work ethic but also for her generosity and creativity. From sewing clothes and repairing uniforms to purchasing televisions and clocks with her own money for patients and staff, Beverly’s work has always gone far beyond her job description.
Strength Through Loss
Beverly’s story is also one of perseverance. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she poured her talents into sewing 853 masks for staff and patients when supplies ran short. Her handcrafted masks, made from colorful fabrics, provided both protection and comfort during uncertain times.
But the pandemic also brought personal heartbreak. Beverly lost her son to COVID-19 after he collapsed at the hospital where he sought treatment. The grief could have overwhelmed her, but Beverly chose strength. Just days later, she returned to South Florida State Hospital—pouring her heart back into the work and the people who gave her purpose.
“My son was strong,” she recalls. “But what kept me going were the people here. They call me every day. They keep me strong.”
Living the Principles of Recovery Solutions
Beverly’s career is a living reflection of Recovery Solutions’ guiding principles: compassion, dignity, resilience, and community. She has helped countless individuals transition through the hospital, treating every person as though they were her own family.
Whether it’s making someone laugh with her boombox and impromptu dance sessions, or quietly hemming clothing for a patient in need, Beverly embodies the idea that recovery is built on respect and humanity.
Her advice to the next generation of caregivers is simple, but profound: “Keep your eyes open. Keep your ears open. Learn. And above all, be willing to give. Treat everyone like they could be your family.”
A Life of Service, A Legacy of Love
As Beverly celebrates her 80th birthday this September, her 51 years of service remind us that care is not just a job—it’s a calling. She raised her children within the walls of the hospital, and in return, the community she served became a second family that has sustained her through life’s hardest moments.
When asked to reflect on her time at the South Florida State Hospital, she responded simply “I like what I’m doing, and I enjoy it every day.” When Beverly started at SFSH, her children were in elementary school. Now her three daughters are 50, 55, and 60 respectively. She describes showing up for work at 7am every day, even though she’s not due until 7:30am. Her work is not just a job, it’s a mission – a mission to “give people the help they need.”
