BACKGROUND:
The Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) Mental Health Rehabilitation Center (MHRC), is a 16-bed facility located in Los Angeles County, California, designed to provide comprehensive care for individuals with serious mental illness, including those who are dually diagnosed with co-occurring substance use disorders. The program launched in 2025.
Philosophy:
MLK MHRC is committed to empowering individuals with psychiatric illness to live more independently by delivering trauma-informed, person-centered care. The program emphasizes dignity, accountability, and structured rehabilitation to support individuals transitioning back to the community. Treatment is customized to support a broad range of needs, including those of Murphy Conservatees and individuals conserved under the Lanterman-Petris-Short (LPS) Act, with a focus on promoting long-term stability and reducing risk of relapse or crisis recurrence.
Services:
Goal-oriented mental health rehabilitation programming; individualized treatment planning with interdisciplinary teams; substance use education and relapse prevention strategies; crisis prevention and emotional regulation support; and coordination with conservators, courts, and community-based providers for successful reentry.

- Reached full program capacity within 30 days of opening
- Achieved initial DHCS licensure and Medi-Cal certification
- Interviewed, hired, and completed comprehensive orientation for 25+ staff within 60 days
